At Jersey’s much-loved Norman Market, visitors come for the food, but this summer a part of them will also be invited to discover the language and culture behind it.
From 8 to 12 July 2026, Alliance Française de Jersey will present “At the Norman Market!”, a free programme combining French cuisine, music and language activities for groups of children and older residents.
In link with La Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche and supported by the Jersey Community Foundation through Channel Islands Lottery funding, this initiative aims to celebrate the Island’s enduring cultural ties with Normandy and France through a series of engaging and accessible experiences.
Discovering French Through Food, Music and Shared Experiences
The Norman Market takes place in St Helier three times a year, bringing Normandy producers to Jersey with cheeses, charcuterie, fruit, vegetables, crêpes and regional specialities.
For the July 2026 edition, the largest of the year, participants will spend time at the market, meet producers and discover Norman products. They will then take part in short workshops at Alliance Française de Jersey, focused on music, songs and French language activities.
The programme will include:
- Discovering Norman food products available at the market;
- Meeting producers and craftspeople;
- A quiz booklet designed for children;
- Cultural and musical workshops at Alliance Française de Jersey;
- An introduction to French through listening, singing and interactive activities;
- Free participation for all eligible groups.
The objective is to make French culture feel approachable, tangible and enjoyable.
A Programme Designed for Both Children and Older Residents
The project focuses on two audiences.
- Children learning French in schools located furthest from St Helier will be welcomed on 9 and 10 July, with up to two groups attending each day. Their visit will include time at the market, supported by a quiz-based activity booklet, followed by educational, artistic and cultural workshops at Alliance Française de Jersey ;
- Older residents living in care facilities in St Helier will take part in a shorter programme. They will be welcomed during weekday afternoons and on the mornings of 11 and 12 July.
Their experience will combine a guided tasting of local products with a musical session based on a well-known French song, such as “La Vie en Rose” by Édith Piaf. The format is designed to be accessible even for people with little or no knowledge of French.
Bringing Jersey’s Franco-Norman Heritage to Life
Through “At the Norman Market!”, Alliance Française de Jersey aims to create an intergenerational cultural experience.
For younger participants, the project shows that French is not only a school subject. It is also a language connected to food, music, stories, places and people.
For older residents, the programme offers an opportunity to reconnect with a culture that once played a more visible role in Jersey, before English became clearly predominant.
The initiative also forms part of the lead-up to “2027, Year of the Normans”, an international commemoration around the millennium of William the Conqueror.
A New Chapter for Alliance Française de Jersey
The idea emerged following the arrival of Alliance Française de Jersey’s new Director in March 2026. Previous activities during the Norman Market had been limited to children from one school; the 2026 programme expands the concept to more schools and older residents.
Alliance Française de Jersey celebrated its 30th anniversary on 24 April 2026 in the presence of the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Founded after the closure of the permanent French Consulate in Jersey, it is now the Island’s only official international French cultural institution.
If this expanded first edition proves successful, the concept could be developed for future Norman Markets, including the Christmas edition.
